PS OUR mama moth laid her babies on my hand, lap car, cage and every where else close to me.Sadly she only lived long enough to give me the most precious present I have had in a long long time.We had 63 babies and in the beginning before we were extra careful the cat stepped on one. Than one had trouble molting and we couldn't save it.We started getting a regular assembly line going(my grown son and me)They have consumed most of our waking hours. Now finally I can breathe a little as we only have about six more to get cooconed. We cut large branches off of my 3 plum trees and stick them in water. We have been saving jugs of gator ade.We just make a ever so small hall in the top to squeeze the branch in. WELL<after going thru all those prior moltingsthey take a real big messy poop and sleep for a day or so and than,I put them on one of our branches already set up.We molted about fifty already and only have about 7or so left.Boy I miss those little guys already.I wear glasses and my eyesight is not so hot so I have a powerful magnifying glass to bring my world closer to theirs.Honestly you can see their little expressions and they notice when you move or some one enters the room as they turn their little heads and sometimes only just their eyes which I wouldn't of caught if I were just relying on myown eye sight. My life sure has gotten alot brighter since these little angels have come into my world.
Oh how happy I am to find someone else in this world that also loves our little, sweet catterpillers. We have absolutely fallen in love with "our babies"We have put alot of love and affection into our rearing of thease litle guys. They show so much affection back when we show them them the least attention.I pet them ever so softly on their chubby little legs, and I pet their on their little heads and they respond much like a cat wouldby putting their heads backs to say more please.Because I have held ,kissed, played with andgave all I have to give they have done the same for me....THEY RESPOND TO AFFECTION.I no longer think of them as bugs but know that they intereact with me to the point that that they would rather stay on my hand in the morning when I go to feed them than go to the fesh leaves. My phone no is 1-262-363-2344 if you want to talk ...really I can't say enough good things about my babies Cindy Thornton

Wow, what an amazing creature! I've just looked up the moth to see what these turn into, and that is incredible too. I've just become fascinated by moths this year, and haven't ever tried raising my own from caterpillars - it sounds very exciting.

We're having a lot of fun looking at your photos, and are impressed with the variety of caterpillars and butterflies you're rearing. The large pop-up bug holder from Insect Lore is great, isn't it? Here's a link to our Monarch madness:

The female can not fly untill she lays around half of her eggs because her body is to heavy full of eggs. This is true of all giant silk moths. Make sure to keep the caterpillars outdoors Or there is a high probability the will get the dreaded diareah virus that will wipe out all the caterpillars. Also If u can find a small buckthorn tree and plant it. The cocoons will be bright red and this is their prefered host plant.Good luck. P.S. the caterpillars usually are humongous when fed this.
